How to watermark your photos, and when you shouldn't

The short answer

To watermark a photo, switch on the watermark setting as you export, in Lightroom Classic or Lightroom on your phone. Mark the previews a client picks from, and leave the photos they paid for clean.

The proof gallery has been open for three weeks, and the couple still hasn't picked. Meanwhile, mum has screenshotted her favourites for the family group chat. One photographer summed up the wait: “a few brides have held me up on picture choices”. While the client decides, the previews are all anyone has, so they should carry your name.

How do I add a watermark in Lightroom Classic?

In Lightroom Classic, you design the watermark once, then switch it on each time you export. These are Adobe's steps:

  1. Choose Edit > Edit Watermarks on Windows, or Lightroom Classic > Edit Watermarks on a Mac.
  2. Pick a Watermark Style: Text for your name, or Graphic for a PNG or JPEG logo.
  3. Set the Watermark Effects: Opacity, Size, Inset and Anchor. Anchor offers nine spots on the photo.
  4. Click Save.
  5. Select your photos, choose File > Export, and scroll to the Watermarking panel.
  6. Tick Watermark and choose your saved mark from the menu.

It works when you export JPEG, PNG, TIFF, PSD, JPEG XL or AVIF files. The Simple Copyright Watermark option prints your Copyright metadata instead. If that field is empty, no mark appears. Shooting RAW? You're exporting JPEGs anyway, so see how to convert RAW to JPG.

Where should a watermark go, and how strong should it be?

A watermark should be easy to spot and easy to ignore. On a proof gallery, put it in a corner or along an edge, small and partly see-through.

A big mark across the middle is harder to crop out. It also stops the couple judging faces, which is the whole point of a proof gallery.

  • Use a PNG with a transparent background, so no white box sits around your logo.
  • Test it on a white dress and a dark suit. If it vanishes on either, Adobe suggests a larger size or a new spot.
  • Lower the opacity until people see the photo first and your mark second.
  • Check it on a portrait frame and a landscape one before you save.

Should I watermark photos the client paid for?

No. Watermark the proof gallery and your sneak peeks, then deliver the paid-for gallery clean.

The couple will print those photos, frame them and post them. A logo across their first kiss says you don't trust them. If you want credit when they share, ask for a tag in your thank-you email.

How do I watermark a video?

To watermark a video, add your logo as an image overlay when you export. In Adobe Premiere it sits in Export mode, so your timeline stays untouched.

  1. In Export mode, select Choose next to the Applied field and pick your logo file.
  2. Set the Position. There are nine, from Top Left to Bottom Right.
  3. Nudge it with Offset (X,Y), then set Size and Opacity.
  4. Save it as a custom preset, or you'll set it all again next export.

Save the big, obvious mark for review cuts of a highlight film. Adobe suggests a see-through PNG that says PREVIEW or DRAFT. The client can still give notes, but the cut won't pass for the finished film.

Does a watermark stop people stealing your photos?

No. A watermark makes copying more awkward and keeps your name on shared copies, but it can be removed.

In 2017, Google researchers showed that software can strip a watermark that appears the same way on many photos. Moving the mark around, or small changes to its opacity, did not stop it.

So treat the mark as a signature. The real protection is simple: don't send the clean full-size file until it's paid for.

How bckendIQ handles it

In bckendIQ, the watermark lives on the gallery, not in your export. Here is how each piece works.

  1. 1

A watermark switch on each proof gallery

Move a proof set to Client Approval and the email opens as the couple will see it. Each proof gallery gets its own watermark switch.

    Open it in bckendIQ →
  2. 2

The clean file stays with you

On a proof set, or a gallery with your logo or smaller downloads, clients receive only the stamped preview. The clean full-size file is never sent to their browser.

  3. 3

Your logo on films and guest photos

A gallery's logo sits over each film as it plays and is burned into the download. Guest galleries get the logo-on-photos panel, with a photo showing exactly where it lands.

  4. 4

Tell the couple why the previews are marked

Send to client for approval opens the letter first. Change the subject, headline, message and button before it goes, so the couple knows what they're looking at.

Questions people ask

How do I watermark my photos?
Switch on the watermark setting when you export. In Lightroom Classic, tick Watermark in the Export dialog and pick a saved mark. On a phone, Lightroom has an Include watermark switch when you share.
Can someone remove my watermark?
Yes. Software can remove a watermark, especially one that sits the same way on many photos. Hold back the clean full-size file until the client has paid.
What file should a logo watermark be?
A PNG with a transparent background. Adobe recommends it for video overlays, and Lightroom Classic takes a PNG or JPEG for a graphic mark.
Should I watermark the final wedding gallery?
No. Watermark the proof gallery the couple picks from. The finished photos they paid for should arrive clean, ready to print and share.

Step 3

Deliver the work

Galleries clients love, without three extra apps.

  • Photos and films in one gallery

The problem: Photos in one app, films in another, and feedback in a third.

What bckendIQ does: A client’s photos and films live in one gallery. They approve, comment and pin a note to a spot on a photo or a moment in a film. Each note reaches the editor.

  • No separate export and watermark apps

The problem: Before a gallery goes up, RAWs need converting and previews need a watermark.

What bckendIQ does: RAW files become full-size JPEGs in your browser. Add your logo or a proof watermark, choose full-size or web-size downloads, pick a cover, and see views and downloads.

  • Guests get only their photos

The problem: Guests ask for “the photos of me” for weeks after the wedding.

What bckendIQ does: Print your QR code. Guests scan it and enter their name, email and a selfie. Each gets a private link with the photos they’re in, with your studio’s name on it.

  • Guests add what they filmed

The problem: Guests capture moments you never saw, and those stay on their phones.

What bckendIQ does: Guests upload photos and videos from your QR code into the event gallery, as one set after your work. You approve each upload, or turn on auto-publish.
